Summary
This is a master list of topics i have been learning about from reading primarily. Those topics i think about through experiences, conversations and doing are more aggregated in the logs. i hope to tag and sort better but the related notes below are roughly titled with a topic. they also help me learn about myself - self knowledge.
Related notes
- imperfection vs action in coops
- “we are imperfect people building imperfect systems, sharing the honest work of serving our people, softening our hearts to feel it all, and preserving all that is good to carry forth.” (Choy Commons)
- i want my work to combine studies and participation/observation like activist-philosopher Grace Lee Boggs.
- Boggs’ “political path” has been “guided by her study of global and historical change, hand- in- hand with daily participation in and observation of the struggles of people at the grassroots level.
- i am learning to discuss and learn about politics calmly. instead of feeling angry and opinionated when i try to discuss politics, I look up the numbers and information. for example previously I faced these discussions around
- (1) does working as a rocket engineer increase welfare of the japanese mass
- (2) why is trump promoting ceasefire - what are the incentives?
- discussions with Political economics study group volunteer helped me learn about china but also made me scared about political involvement
- i am annoyed by the political economy study group volunteer. i want to know when the program starts and what is the actual structure. he doesn’t tell me and just ask me more “interview” questions about various news topics and my opinion. i am suspecting he is just collecting these information, like maybe a brainwash camp. i don’t understand how their organization works, why they never start the program just keep interviewing. i don’t have to do this. but i am still curious because i do benefit from searching up the terms.
- “调休政策:认同还是反对?”
- application of cybernetics in post WWII china for farm and factory was ineffective Paladium. The Genealogy of Chinese Cybernetics.
- why didn’t the operations work for factories and farms?
- “mathematician Hua Luogeng—who had attended lectures by Norbert Wiener when he visited Tsinghua in 1936—to introduce critical path organizational techniques to factories and farms as part of a short-lived Science of Operations Research and Linear Programming Movement.”
- “from his place at the center, the political structure appeared to have a level of organization and capacity that simply did not play out in the rest of the country.”
- what is the history and present condition of the postdoc profession, and geographically?
- “Postdocs are a career step that was invented in the 1930s to create a longer path between PhDs and professorships to try and balance the mismatch between supply and demand.” (Casey Handmer, Grad School Survival Guide)
- adrienne maree brown et.al. Emergent Strategy: “personal is political.”
- what does this involve: loneliness, pleasure, desire. longing for safety and abundance. what longings, what pleasure, what communities and connections, what philosophies and divinities.
- how personal to political scales or doesn’t scale: a collective-intelligence problem in action and with examples!
- Black mesa solidarity network on ground support guide: “If you are interested in further research on the situation at Big Mountain/Black Mesa, there are many important books and articles that have been published over the decades. Here is a reading list to start with”

- 草甘膦的多重本体与科学知识的不确定性 (an anthropology of science article about the pesticide Glyphosate from tying knots account)
- the law view of hypothesis test anchor on safety
- companies control what can be researched and what can be found by funding the research or the answer
- the law view of hypothesis test anchor on safety
- hexaco personality test
- personality test categorization does help me describe my tendencies and also recognize shifts in my patterns over periods
- i am attracted to black mesa and permaculture farms.
- why? to get to know people, their history, their politics. I want to not just stay in ignorance. i want to learn how to interact with this world, as a chinese and as a scientist
